Don't be surprised by the low number of live gateways on this list — at the time of writing, only about 2.41% are actually serving Arweave data.
Although the Viewblock gateway list is somewhat stale, it remains useful for validating the health of the canonical gateway arweave.net. Furthermore, we can query arweave.net/peers directly to fetch an updated list of active nodes.
However, because direct node IPs typically serve HTTP over port 1984, web-based clients need queries routed through reverse-proxy gateways (like arweave.net via port 443) to support HTTPS payloads and prevent CORS or SSL errors.
